The main opposition party Nepali Congress (NC) has protested against the ruling Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) 's decision to grant citizenship to a foreign woman only after seven years of marriage.
Married Adopted Citizenship Congress Objections to CPN's Decision
Bimalendra Nidhi said "As per the wishes of the Prime Minister, we reached Baluwatar on Thursday and had our say. Our party's official position is to maintain the Nepal Citizenship Act, 2063. We had said that no amendment was necessary. He said that we will discuss with the party and inform you. Now we are saddened by his unilateral decision. I want to apologize for that.
'
Nidhi also clarified that they would not agree to amend the Nepal Citizenship Act, 2063 BS. He said, "The current system should be maintained. We are not in favor of the amendment being made by the government. This is our opinion.

Stating that the move of the CPN (Maoist) is reprehensible, it is a fund that has created social, cultural, political and communal conflict.
New map unanimously approved by Parliament
"If the news in the media is true, it is a very reprehensible act. We do not accept such legislation, "said Nidhi, expressing personal opinion. This is very unfortunate. We also urge all concerned to be aware of this.
Similarly, Congress leader Krishna Prasad Sitaula said that the Congress had already put its views before the Prime Minister and the government had not chosen the path of consensus. He said that the Congress would clarify its position by discussing the decision of the CPN (Maoist) within the party.
The government had asked for five more days to reach a consensus on the citizenship bill on Wednesday. On Thursday, Prime Minister KP Oli understood the NC's position on creating an atmosphere of consensus.
According to the Citizenship Act of 2063 BS, the Nepali Congress had reiterated its stance that Nepali citizenship should be given immediately to foreign brides who have married Nepalis. In this regard, the Janata Samajwadi Party along with the Nepali Congress is also in favor of maintaining the current system of marital adoption.
Retweeting Dipendra Jha's tweet to the Chief Justice of State 2, senior leader of Janata Samajwadi Party Dr. Waburam Bhattarai has also expressed dissatisfaction over the decision of the CPN (Maoist).
Sarita Giri's amendment proposal rejected
Chief Justice Jhapa wrote on Twitter, "Yes, this is the question I have also raised. Not only that, a married woman has to be examined by the Public Service Commission. Her husband passed away seven years ago. It is like chewing an iron fist to get a share, prove her relationship and get citizenship. Let's think seriously, not on impulse. '
In the state assembly meeting of state 2 held on Saturday, Janata Samajwadi and Congress lawmakers had accused the CPN (Maoist) decision of being anti-women and anti-Madhesh. The bill has been stalled in the Committee on Public Administration and Good Governance under the House of Representatives of the Federal Parliament since 2075 BS due to their flight. Under the current system, a foreign woman who is married to a Nepali citizen can get naturalized citizenship immediately.
In the bill under consideration in the committee, it was proposed to amend the sub-section 1 of section 5 of the existing act and submit a statement that a woman who wants to obtain adopted citizenship has renounced her citizenship abroad within six months of acquiring Nepali citizenship.
Failure to do so would result in revocation of Nepal's citizenship. During the discussion in the committee, it was proposed by the secretariat of the chairperson of the committee to give the adopted citizenship only after 7 years.
After the CPN (Maoist) stood in favor of the proposal, the system of taking adopted citizenship through marriage is going to be modified. As the CPN (Maoist) has a comfortable majority in both the houses of the federal parliament, the law will be passed easily as per the decision of the CPN (Maoist) on the issue of adopted marital citizenship.
